Description
Things I filmed around south Iceland in April and June 2008. No famous landmarks or anything spectacular, just the everyday beauty of the area. The film begins with the ascent of Hellisheiði, the "mountain" (or heath, more accurately) that one must pass to get to Reykjavík from Selfoss or Hveragerði. Traveling this road gives a nice aerial view of the little town of Hveragerði. On top of the heath there are many geothermal spots as the whole area is quite seismically active, making it a great location for a geothermal power plant. It uses the naturally-occurring steam (a clean and renewable source of energy) to generate electricity. A pipeline (visible in the film) also carries this steam to homes and buildings in the area to provide clean, inexpensive heat. The geothermal park shown in the film has many new small hot springs that were formed after a large earthquake at the end of May 2008. At the end of the film is a small group of Icelandic sheep and lambs. Both their meat and their wool are high quality and fetch a high price. |
